Just Gulping Down Water Isn’t Enough!
So let’s say you just woke up, hungover or maybe just cried your heart out. With the bonafide intention of getting your demons out, and to hydrate yourself, you march to the kitchen and feverishly gulp down a bottle of water. What is that you did wrong? Well, you just did the opposite of hydrating yourself.
What is wrong with chugging water down?
We’ve always been hearing it- drink as much water as you can. Yes, drinking enough water has a lot of positive effects on your body and health. But gulping down bottles of water- in other words, drinking too much of water- your body would push it out as urine, only to slow the hydration process. This happens because as you drink water too swiftly, it will cause your blood to dilute. As a result, instead of having the hydrating effect, the water you drink would merely get excreted out by the kidneys.
Water intoxication or hypernatremia
People have a hard time believing anything like that. But yes, drinking water in excess quantities does cause a condition called this. The situation can be put down like this- as you drink excess water and your blood gets diluted, it results in an imbalance in the fluids around the body cells. It further leads to fluids moving to cells from the blood, resulting in swollen cells.
How much water is “Excess”?
The situation mentioned above is rare, only resulting from water intake as high as a gallon (3.75 liters) in every 3-5 or so hours. The ideal water intake suggested is 2-3 liters (about a gallon) of water per day, depending on the physique and factors of the person.
What is the right way to drink water?
Sipping water, just a few ounces at a time is the best way. It would give your body enough time to process the water to bring you the benefits intended. To remind yourself to drink water in every few minutes, carrying bottled water would be a good idea.
