Summer Heat Means You Need THIS Much Water

Posted on: July 8, 2019

Summer is in full swing which means long days outside, hanging out by the pool, and barbecues with friends and family. That also means temperatures passing 90 degrees. While hot temperatures are awesome for taking trips to the beach and spending quality time outdoors, it also means your body needs a lot more water than usual. When we are outside in the heat, we lose water a lot faster than usual which requires more hydration. Not only is drinking a nice glass of water a great way to cool down, but it also can prevent you from serious health repercussions.

Not sure how much water you’re going to need to beat the heat?

First things first – there is no one size fits all approach to how much water you should drink. We are all different. Different height, weight, exercise level, and other factors. It is important to make sure you’re drinking the correct amount of water that your body requires. A good rule of thumb is to intake half of your body weight in ounces of water (Ex: A 160 pound person should intake 80 ounces of water). The more time you spend outdoors or exercising may increase the amount that you should intake to replenish the loss from sweat and muscle use. While drinking water straight can be boring for some, we have some tips to help you reach your daily goal.

Hydration is more than just drinking water

Let’s face it, forcing yourself to drink a ton of water can be daunting. We have good news though – there are other ways you can use to reach a healthy level of hydration. First, almost all drinks contain at least some water in them which means you can have some of your favorite beverages while hydrating at the same time. Fruit juices, sparkling water, and tea are delicious healthy alternatives to water. Second, some foods contain a good amount of water as well. Fruits and vegetables are a fun way to make reaching your goal easier. By combining drinking water, alternatives, and certain foods, you will be reaching your goals in no time.

But how do I know if I’m thirsty?

If you take away one thing from this article it is that you shouldn’t wait until you feel thirsty to start hydrating. This is because by the time your body is telling you to drink water – you are already dehydrated. Some tell tale signs to alert you if you’re thirsty are dizziness, fatigue, dry skin, and dark-colored urine. A great habit to get into is sipping water periodically throughout the day. Being constantly hydrated is much better than drinking a lot of water in one sitting.
